Your Experience

Did you know - the Athens Marathon race is inspired by the Ancient Greek legend of Pheidippides, a messenger who is said to have run from Marathon to Athens to bring news of the Greek victory over the Persians at the Battle of Marathon. This is your opportunity to run the original marathon route. Run through history with more than 43,000 runners and 80,000 spectators. The course starts in the village of Marathon and becomes hilly for the middle third of the distance, the last third being a gradual downhill before finishing inside the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens.

Top 100: Rated by Runners World UK as one of the 100 best races in the world (hand picked by a panel of athletes and experts in 2022)

It passes the Tomb of Marathon where the Athenians soldiers who lost their lives in this historic battle are buried. The course is very hilly from nine (9) miles until 20 miles. The last 10K is mostly a gradual downhill. It finishes inside the Panathenaic Stadium  built for the first modern Olympics in 1896. The 5K and 10K both start on Amalias Avenue in front of the Zappeion Megaro entrance (walking distance from the hotels) and finish inside the Stadium. You can find the course map here.

Each runner must pick up their own race packet at the Expo.  Time has been allotted for this during the half-day city tour.

Eligibility

All runners must be at least 18 years of age on race day.

Awards

Every finisher will receive a medal, finisher certificate, sport-bag and commemorative t-shirt.
